Copywriting myth: You must be a born copywriter

Do you ever think, "Maybe she's born with it?"

No, we’re not going to start shilling for Maybelline. 💅 We’re going to talk about the inherent craziness of the idea that you must be a born writer to be a good copywriter.

Yes, it’s true that some people have an affinity for the written word (and enjoy using words like ‘affinity’ 😊). However, like any other skill, copywriting can be learned. It’s about understanding people, crafting messages that resonate, and using language that speaks to your audience.

Think about it: we all communicate daily. We send texts, write emails, post on social media—basically, we’re all copywriters in some way. The difference between someone who writes for business and someone who writes for fun or personal reasons is simply knowing how to tap into the needs, desires, and emotions of the people you're speaking to. Oh, and you also need to know where it’s appropriate to post that cute picture of your cat*.

Good copywriting isn’t about flowing prose or fancy words. It’s about clarity, focus, and the ability to sell an idea in the most compelling way. You don’t need to be the next Hemingway to create powerful copy. What you need is curiosity about your audience – and a willingness to spend the time to hone your craft.

And sometimes a comic can sum up your newsletter in just 6 panels. We LOVE this comic from Sarah Andersen (and really, all her comics – she’s awesome!). Swap out drawing for copywriting, and we think she nailed it!

So get writing! Feeling hesitant is one of THE most writer-y things you can do 😅 But keep going, it's the only thing that has ever resulted in 'the thing' getting written.
