Unique selling points: How are you different from your competitors?

Hey friend, have you taken a moment lately to celebrate what makes you, YOU?

No this isn’t inspirational spam that you accidentally subscribed to from an Instagram post you saw at 2am (no judgement, we’ve all been there!).

While we are certain that you are personally awesome, today we’re talking about your business. When you’ve been running your business for some time, it can be hard to remember what makes you great. What is it that makes your clients choose you over all the competitors, and keeps them coming back?

More importantly, when you do uncover these things that make you awesome, you have to shout it from the rooftops!

How do you determine your business strengths?

Ask your customers! It’s not rocket science, but it can be difficult to find the time. Not to mention it can feel a bit weird asking someone why they like your business. Surveys are great for this, but sometimes lack the depth (and response rates can be quite small). If you have a couple of clients who have recently signed up, or who have been with you for years, see if you can take them out for a coffee and pick their brains. If you work remotely, ask them for a 15-minute chat. These don’t need to be long conversations, simply a quick ‘why did you pick us?’

If the conversation stalls, ask them what they think about a few different areas of your product/service:

  1. Quality

  2. Variety

  3. Availability

  4. Cost

  5. Reliability

  6. Ability to get in touch with a real human

  7. Dedicated support contacts

Another simple way to differentiate yourself from your competitors is to spend some time on their social media/websites. What do they declare is their specialty? Is it something you do better, or do you have a different strength.

Once you are clear on your selling points, make sure you can clearly articulate them. We live in an age of short attention spans. You should be able to state each selling point in just a few words, that can then be expanded on in longer-form content.

Lastly, we know we’ve been banging on about it recently, but taking some time to put some of your content into short-form video is so worthwhile! We know it can be scary, but give it a go!
